Rasque finally catches up to where the readers have been for a while.
So I know this is kind of an obvious thing to do, but this is more a means to an end than it is the point itself. This was just to illustrate what I was going for a little easier and it’s not really about the drama of it (though I will not shy away from the drama when appropriate). For the sake of not writing a book about my intentions in the author’s notes, we’ll leave it at that for now.
Thanks for reading! See you next week!
Now I’m curious as to what Calem’s role in all this is.
A good question! It’s not intended as a mystery, but there hasn’t really been anywhere in the comic for that information to be explained so it just hasn’t been. …but since you asked… ๐
Calem is an employee of Rasque’s parents. A butler/head-of-household-staff type of job – a live-in position where he takes care of keeping things in order in their home. Rasque calls him “Master” just as a more formal version of “Mister” – a point I imagine his parents drilled into him as they respect their employees and they probably don’t want their kid ever being rude and making those jobs harder. (Calem in turn calls Rasque “young master” as in “the son of my boss”. It’s a bit awkward, I know.) He’s here basically as Rasque’s guardian while his parents are away.
As a live-in employee who’s been with them for a long time (Calem is the one driving the carriage in the opening scene) he – and by extension his daughter – are basically part of the family at this point. …which somewhat awkwardly makes Kas the sibling Rasque never had. ๐
That’s a lot of specific info to leave out, but I didn’t want to explain it in narration and none of these characters would have any need to discuss it. I like to think there’s enough context clues to understand that Calem is someone Raque respects and Kas is someone he can confide in and for the purposes of the story I think that’s pretty much what’s needed.
Wow. I figured he was in charge, but I didn’t know the details. Kinda like a butler in charge of sorts. Interesting.
